The Discord debate in Brazil changed in a few days. On August 6, the first lady Janja da Silva publicly defended that the platform be removed by commenting on a case involving a 13-year-old teenager and a transmission on the platform.
The statement drew attention because Discord is used far beyond private messages. Game servers, GTA communities, study groups, software projects and voice chat teams depend on the service daily.
At that moment, Janja's speech did not in itself represent a blocking order. The First Lady is not competent to suspend a platform; any such measure depends on the performance of the responsible bodies and authorities.
The case, however, was already being analyzed by the Brazilian authorities and gained new developments in the following days.
Was Discord blocked in Brazil?
Nope. Until this update, Discord remains accessible in the country for messages, servers and voice calls.
What happened was a more limited measure. On August 12, the National Data Protection Agency (ANPD) determined the precautionary suspension of live transmission resources in Brazil for issues related to the protection of children and adolescents.
Second Reuters, the decision gave time for the company to demonstrate compliance and provides for sanctions in case of non-compliance. The measure may be challenged administratively.
On August 17, reports of unavailability of video calls and screen sharing for Brazilian users began to appear, while audio calls and other functions remained active.
Why did the case get to ANPD?
The discussion is linked to the protection of minors in digital services and the way platforms prevent risks of violence, self-mutilation and exploitation.
The ANPD began to have new oversight assignments on digital platforms in 2026, in a regulatory environment that also includes the Digital ACE.
The measure against transmissions was presented as a precautionary measure, i.e. it is not equivalent to a final decision to ban the country's Discord.
Discord states that it cooperates with the authorities and seeks to restore the resources affected after meeting security requirements.
What had changed before this crisis
Before the August episode, Discord had already adapted the Brazilian experience to the rules of the Digital ECA.
The company itself informs that it began in March 2026 to implement age group check in Brazil, besides more protective settings for adolescents.
These changes include filters for sensitive content, restrictions on age-rated spaces and more rigid social settings by default.
Discord states that most users do not need to send documents or do an age manual check to normally use the platform.
The impact for those who use Discord to play
For the gamer community, the difference between blocking the entire platform and suspending only specific resources is important.
GTA, Minecraft, Counter-Strike, Valorant and other games continue to work for text and voice, but broadcasts and video may be unavailable as long as the measure is in place.
This mainly affects groups that use Discord to stream matches, track friends' screens, or make video calls inside servers.
At the same time, the case shows that platforms aimed at gaming communities are also subject to the same security and responsibility discussions that affect larger social networks.
The central issue now is not whether “Janja took the Discord out of the air”, because that did not happen. The point is what measures the platform will have to take so that suspended resources can return.

This article was updated because the situation has changed since the original publication. The ANPD determined the precautionary suspension of live broadcasts and Discord began to restrict related resources in Brazil.
The rest of the platform remains available. If there is a new ANPD decision, change in suspension or restoration of transmissions, this text should be updated again.
For those who use Discord on a day-to-day basis, the recommendation is to distinguish the political discussion from the technical situation: there is currently no total blockade of the service in Brazil.
